This week the WCFBL wrapped up the early part of the season in San Francisco with our final game at Host Ron Isola's Riordan High School field of dreams. If you can take some time to thank Ron, please, it would be appreciated. Today's game was reminiscent of many cold, windy, sunny days at Candelstick Park. Adventures in fielding were a-plenty as the wind whipped every flyball to cyclonic perfection. Just catching the ball was a great catch today. Running from first to second was also a challenge to many of the over sized flannel-garbed runners. |

Yomuri Giants (Schmuck-Miller) 8 vs Philadelphia A's (Mello-Luis) 1 The Philadelphia A's learned that unearned runs still count while the Giants rode the rubber arm of Dave Chilcote and Carl "Sawmill" Vargas to stuff Philly on just three lone singles. The A's did manage two sweet double plays to highlight their day and keep their hopes alive. Chilly led the Japanese Giants with a double and two singles and Mike Dejardines slapped a double and a single to power the Nipponese attack. Matt Schmuck, Dave Montellato, and Carl Vargas each had two-single days to pile on the Philly boys. Mike Miller garnered a singelton and Mark Travis jacked a single to complete the Yomuri attack. Craig Alexander, Mike Mello, and Gary Hooper were the lone A's hitters for the day. Chris Dorn saw his brand new maple bat burst into splinters right through his fingers earning Carl Vargas the sobriquet "Sawmill"! |

San Francisco Giants (Bennett-Lee) 7 vs 62' Giants (Terra-Realini) 2 The San Francisco Giants rode the baffling arm of Heath Keller, the big bat of Bobby Hartkop, and the solid fielding of Mike "Pool Boy" Hughey to soundly thump the '62 Giants. Joe Gagliardo kept the '62 guys close for four innings before the wind and the San Francisco bats punched holes in the '62 defense. Bobby Hartkop finished up hurling for the San Francisco Giants while old Randy Saladana turned in another solid turn on the mound for the "Terralini's". Besides Moochies spotless fielding (which earned him the Most Valuable Pool Player of the day) the '62 Giants did pull off a Decruz (CF) to Realini (2B) to Nelson (Catching) strike to the plate to snag the fleet-footed Tom San Filippo. You know he is the leading WCFBL base stealer! Bobby Hartkop smacked four loud singles limping gamely to first each agonizing time, while Doug Meyer cracked three bingles of his own to lead the SF boys. Mark "Green Fleece" Bruzzone added two singles. John Haines, Mike Miller, and Heath Keller each belted singles to complete the '62 Giant pounding for the day. With Mark Gemello sitting in Fenway, Greg Terra lounging in Maui, Lynn Harkreider home alone taking care of mom (legit excuse, our prayers are with him) and Dennis San Filippo trying to pay his fleet-footed brother Tom's bills, the Terralini's managed to eke out two runs on ten hits. Joe Gagliardo, Randy Wallace, and Jim Realini each crunched two singles while Doug Rusch, Jim Cullen, and Mike Shafer added a single apiece. The big hit of the day went to Craig Nelson who crushed a triple to right center to spark fleeting hope in the '62 Giants chances on the day, Craig did score on Sugar Ray Mialovic's SAC fly but that was all the rally was worth. |
