Last
year when we played at San Leandro it was 110 degrees in the
shade. Not today, it was pleasant weather for baseball.
After finding the ballpark, the men behind the plate had to
ask the police on East 14th Street the correct directions
two entirely different games wre played: a close late-inning
game and a blowout.
The '62 Giants rode the strong arm of Mark Gemello to best a
valiant effort by the San Francisco Giants. Sugar Ray
Miailovich went the fir three for the '62 guys and then
G-Man came in and stymied the SF boys with his nasty curve.
Heath Keller kept the SF Giants alive for six innings with
his usual assortment of frustrating pitches before turning
it over to Doug Meyer who had to suffer through some
mischances in the 8th before succumbing to Dave Decruz's hot
bat.
Dave Decruz led the '62 team with three hits, the last a
clutch game-winner. Sugar Ray had a double while Mark
Gemello, Don Dewitt, Randy Wallace, Ben Chen, and Geoff
Jacobs each slapped singles. Geoff Jacobs made some great
grabs at first to highlight to '62 day and Don Dewitt almost
came up with the catch of the year just missing after
sliding backwards on a deep smash to left
center.
The San Francisco Giants had lots of hits but spread them
out too thin. Gordon Simmons and Todd West each had solid
singles and scorching doubles to lead SF. Joe Matlen and
Scott Pimpl each busted two singles each. Heath Keller
blasted a double while Terry Lee and Doug Meyer smacked
singles. Carl
"Chainsaw" Vargas shut the Oakland A's down on just two hits
over six innings before turning the spheroid over to Lorne
"Ima Catcher"Johnson and Don "Pool Boy" Hahn to close. Gary
Hooper, Mike Byron, and Dave Gayner tried to no avail to
stifle the Yomuiri Giant bats. Steve
Conroy carried the big chopstick on the day with four hits
for Yomuiri. Lorne Johnson and Tenner Schmuck had fine days
at the plate shredding the A's pitching with two-hit days.
Scott Lueders, Count Motellatto, Mike Miller, and Mike
DesJardins slapped singles to round out Yomuirei's Dim Sum
day. Gordon
Yost and Dave Gayner spoiled Chainsaw Vargas' day with a
single each. #1. Moochy Hughey is
herewith cited for running on the field to get his helmet
from the guy running to second on an over throw BEFORE
anyone called time or the play was over. #2. Diablo Terra for
tripping over his own bat running to first
base...and #3. Diablo ag'in, for
running to third (he even rounded it!) on a ten foot pop-up
killing a furtive rally with a double play.
