WCFBA League play
moved north of the Golden Gate to beautiful San Rafael....
We all know what that means: Beer and hot stove lying at the
Flat Iron Bar on B Street!!! Also it signifies that we're in
the final third of our season and bragging rights are up for
grabs. They warn't too much bragging from several
outfielders this weekend as the wind, Molina-speed, and just
oops!! led to several miscues on a lot of fly balls. Each
game featured key drops of the old cans of corn that
affected the outcome of the tussles in one case and might
have stoked the fire of the afternoon blow
out. Don "Big Daddy"
Hahn pitched a helluva game in relief of Randy "Wild Thing"
Saladana to keep the slim, mythical hopes of the '62 Giants
alive. Randy was effectively wild over four innings limiting
the A's to only four runs while hitting six batters. Don
neatly dispatched the A's the last five with a dazzling
display of off-speed tosses that made his hard ones tough to
hit. Mike Hughey
jumped out of the pool to blast two hits, including the
game-winner driving in Lynn Harkreider who stole first after
the A's catcher misplayed a third strike. Eric Macausland
recaptured his high school glory days at Albert Park by
blasting a triple and a two RBI double. Matt Schmuck banged
out two hits on what turned out to be a stellar day for ol'
Tenner (see the next game). Don Dewitt came through leading
off for the first time with hits in his first and last AB's.
Don Hahn and Lynn Harkreider rounded out the '62 attack with
a bingle each. Ben Chen was
involved with an interference call at first base to end the
rally in the 8th and we still don't know what the official
final score really was because of the complicated ruling
which only an instant replay would confirm, unfortunately
upon further review at the Flat Iron everyone agreed that we
all saw something completely different. Okay, this game
was pretty straight forward, the SF Giants pounded the Giant
Birdmen into submission. No quarter was taken, given, or
forgiven. Heath Keller again baffled batters with his
pitching and then Bob Hartkop and Tom Sanfilippo mopped
up. The San Francisco
roster exploded today with three notable bombers: Matt
Schmuck belted four hits and a double (that's 7 hits on the
day), Heath Keller blasted a home run to left field and
collected a double and single setting up a "would he get the
cycle" in his last at bat drama, and Captain Steve Bennett
apparently broke out of his season long slump with a 3-hit
barrage of his own. Craig Nelson slapped a double and a
single, Dave Decruz smacked two singles, and Gordon Simmons
knocked out two hits, while Bob Hartkop, Doug Meyer, Ruben
Donig, and Tom Sanfilippo each added singles to the mighty
SF whippin'. St Louis did get
two doubles and a single from Lyn Lefevre while Doug Rusch
and John Haines each rapped two singles for their team.
Michael Simon and Frank Weishaar bashed bingles to spice up
an otherwise hapless day for the Giant Birds. #1. John Haines
tried to bat without a helmet, again. #2. Haines was
late causing the St Louis staff to activate Bengie Molina
aka Jim Realini to circle helplessly under several fly
balls. #3. Gordon
Simmons did fall for the John Haines hidden ball
trick. #4. Mike Hughey
for sending Eric Macausland home from trhird when the
shortstop (Keller) already had the ball.
